How to Combat Check Fraud

April 16th, 2024

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the American Bankers Association have partnered to provide resources to help combat check fraud:

Consumers can take several actions to protect their mail including:

  • Get your mail promptly after delivery. Don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight.
  • If you’re heading out of town, ask the post office to hold your mail until you return.
  • Sign up for informed delivery at USPS.com. It sends you daily email notifications of incoming mail and packages.
  • Contact the sender if you don’t receive mail that you’re expecting.
  • Consider buying security envelopes to conceal the contents of your mail.
  • Use the letter slots inside your Post Office to send mail.

To protect their checks, bank customers can take the following actions:

  • Use pens with indelible black ink so it is more difficult for a criminal to wash your checks.
  • Don’t leave blank spaces in the payee or amount lines.
  • Don’t write personal details, such as your Social Security number, credit card information, driver’s license number or phone number on checks.
  • Use mobile or online banking to access copies of your checks and ensure they are not altered. While logged in, review your bank activity and statements for errors.
  • If your bank provides an image of a paid check, review the back of the check to ensure the indorsement information is correct and matches the intended payee, since criminals will sometimes deposit your check unaltered.
  • Consider using e-check, ACH automatic payments and other electronic and/or mobile payments.
  • Follow up with payees to make sure that they received your check.

Consumers who suspect they have been a victim of check fraud should file a report immediately with:

Julian Diamond is a self-taught landscape photographer based in Dutchess County, New York, in the heart of the Hudson Valley. His technique has been shaped by a number of artistic influences: the treatment of light by the 19th century Hudson River School painters; the bold compositions of great American West landscape photographers, like Adams, Muench, and Rowell; and his peers with whom he swaps ideas and inspiration each day. His images have been featured in regional and national publications, licensed by local businesses and governmental agencies, and displayed on Capitol Hill in the 2018 photo exhibit, ‘United by the Appalachian Trail.’ Evening and twilight scenes feature heavily in Julian’s work, with starry skies and fireflies making routine appearances in his prints. Rondout Savings Bank Celebrates 150th Anniversary with Donation to Kingston

May 31, 2018

KINGSTON – “I like to think of the City of Kingston as a city of firsts”, said Kingston Mayor Steve Nobel. He was referring to the first lighthouse on the canal back in the 1800’s, and the first woman to operate it; bringing us to the first woman president of Rondout Savings Bank, Cheryl Bowers.

“Its a little bit less about being the first woman as much as it is being the first president that starts the next 150 years.”, said a very humble Cheryl Bowers. Bowers was named the bank’s fourteenth president back in November of 2017.

The evening began with a reception at the Homeport Barn at the foot of Broadway in Kingston. After hor d oeuvres, a welcome from Cheryl Bowers, and cake the crowd moved to the Visitor’s Center. Situated on the grassy knoll, next the the Visitor Center building, the structure stood wrapped in a blue cloth, awaiting its unveiling.

Hundreds gathered around the 10 foot structure that only revealed the blue stone base of the monument. Ulster County Chamber of Commerce President Ward Todd MC’d the event with quick congratulatory words from himself, mayor Noble, and Rich Kleban who came to represent the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, where a Rondout Bank Hyde Park location resides.

After the speeches, Bowers cut the ribbon and behind her, the cloth was snapped away from the structure to reveal a five foot steel lighthouse as a symbol of Rondout’s mission throughout its 150 year history to be a beacon of trust and to provide guidance to the community it serves. Local artist Johnny Poux was commissioned by Rondout Savings Bank to create the lighthouse.

“Two words”, said Tony Marmo, owner of Normann Staffing. “Customer Service. That’s why the bank has been a cornerstone of this community for so long. The staff and management provides consistent and unmatched customer service.”, he said.

Charitable Contributions

Our Board of Trustees, staff and their families live here and share neighborhoods, schools, houses of worship and charities with you and your families.

All decisions are made locally with local interests in mind by what we believe are the best in the business. Rondout Savings Bank is committed to our friends and neighbors. We work every day to earn the business of individuals and organizations in our community, in turn, we return a significant portion of our profits back in to the community.

Thinking in banking terms, we decided to call it our “Dividends to the Community Program.” Each and every year we donate 10% of our earnings to hundreds of area non-profit organizations for a wide range of worthy purposes.
